Guelaguetza
Sunday I went to Guelaguetza, a festival from the Oaxaca region of Mexcio. It was hosted at the CSU San Marcos campus, way up in the boondocks. The food was great, the dancing was cool, my favorite was the one where the girls act like bulls and knock down the boys with a headbutt. All the little boys had chubby cheeks and no hats, all the white kids were wearing 15 layers of clothing to protect from the sun. It was great being around people browner than me for once too.
I went with my officemate Diana and a musician friend Spencer. We had ulterior motives - I'll come clean here. The objective was not only to enjoy ourselves, but I had an idea for an artsy video project and the festival served as source material for it. Our duties split up as such: Diana took pictures, I wrote down notes and thoughts that popped into my head, and Spencer listened to the music and absorbed the overall audio ambience. He's going to cook up some music and other sounds in a recording studio with a friend, I'm going to play with the Diana's images and my text to create the visuals, then I'm going to put them together to see what we get.
Speaking of doing stuff on the side to keep my creative juices flowing, I did some more doodling last night and made this,
my new favorite drawing.
