Random Scattered Thoughts: things I jotted down while preparing for last week's presentation, in no particular order.
Depending on where you come from:
the web looks like a publishing medium (think information)
the web looks like a television, with movies (think passive entertainment)
the web looks like a gaming station (think active entertainment)
the web looks like an OS (think desktop applications)
the web is all of this
and
the web is NONE of this
design of content vs applications vs entertainment vs experimental art
or
the document-centric and application-centric web, which to me means W3C-standards compliant design and multimedia/Flash/Quicktime/etc creation. Seems like I lump together app and game creation in my mind - I think they're both very similar in comparison to content/document/information-related design. Maybe because of the tool sets I use? I prefer HTML for information but Flash for both apps and immersive stuff.
document-centric:
what the w3c standards were originally intended for
they invisioned the web as an electronic publishing medium
one of the main original goals was "one document serves all"
recent xhtml/css revolution makes the original goals possible again, goals we got away from in the rush of the 90's
