It Takes Work To Make Your Workflow Flow
Monday, November 08, 2004
Since I went full-time freelance, it feels like I haven't had a chance to catch my breath and optimize my workflow at all. This is something that I feel like I made progress on years ago, back when I was first starting out at Biology and read Kelly Goto and Emily Cotler's book on web project management, but it feels like I've regressed in that area while my technical skill set progressed. I made a lot of headway in organizing my physical workspace at home this weekend and that was a nice start, but I'd like to take some time to streamline the design and development process itself too.
Some recent articles that have caught my eye:
- Nodes Of Inspiration by Cameron Moll
- Using Patterns In Web Design by 37signals
- Process Articles At AListApart (an oldie but goodie)
It's too easy to fall into a rut of learning new tools instead of challenging yourself to apply them in new ways. This was definitely part of the motivation in becoming an independent developer and throwing myself back into the fire. I'm looking forward to getting the current main project out the door so this weekend I can do one of my old plan-out-your-life sessions with a cup of joe and blank sheets of paper.
